We aim to guide and support students to become excellent communicators through their speech and writing, with the ability to use language creatively and accurately and to understand the writer’s craft through close analysis. Through the study of all the various features of English we aim to increase students’ appreciation and knowledge of the English language and through a rich diet of prose, plays and poetry help them to enjoy the rich diversity of its literature, past and present. Students study a variety of texts including modern novels, English literary classic, plays by Shakespeare, literature from the Classical World, poetry from the English literary tradition, texts that will challenge their understanding and help them question many of the world’s most complex issues.
The department is keen to help students by encouraging the habit and enjoyment of private reading: all students are expected to read for personal enjoyment each week.
Students follow a programme of lessons each half term based around: a theme or programme of study (including Literary Time Travel, Imagery in Poetry and such like) ; the study of a literary text; private reading; graded spelling, punctuation and grammar tests and non-fiction writing.
